Downsizing your home – How to do it right

Downsizing your home - How to do it right

August 10th, 2020

Once the kids have flown the nest, your home can start to feel a little too big for what you actually need. Couple this with retirement and you might begin to consider all the lovely things you could be doing if you simply traded in your current property for one smaller. If this sounds like you, then here are all the reasons why we think you should consider downsizing your home – and how to do it right!

Why downsize?

As we mentioned earlier, your home requirements can change over the years. One main reason for this is when your children move out and start their own families. Why stay in a property that’s too big for you when you could downsize and free up some cash for retirement?

Even if you don’t mind the extra space now, you might find that the home’s upkeep will become a hassle for you as you age. Mobility issues are a huge deciding factor for those looking to downsize and you should consider whether you’d still like to be scaling the stairs and cleaning 4+ bedrooms well into your 70s.

Finally, another equally valid reason to downsize is for your own peace of mind. Many retirees carry around with them the collective memorabilia of several decades. All this clutter can be stressful for both you and your family to deal with later on in life, so why leave the decluttering process until you’re older? Start fresh in a brand new home and only bring with you what truly matters.

Getting it right

There are many things to consider when downsizing your home. The first thing you might want to think about is just how many of your belongings you’re willing to part with, as this will affect the size of the property that you’re able to move into.

Once you’ve cleared out the clutter, you’ll want to look at getting your current home valuated. This is because the value of your current home will largely impact the homes that are available to you. Part exchange is hugely popular with new park homes, and if you’d like some more information on this, we have a blog dedicated to the process of buying a new park home with part exchange.

Now onto the fun part – the house search! You should have an idea of both your budget and the size of home that you’d like. With this, you can scour the area to find suitable homes for you, taking into account your lifestyle and future plans. Make sure to also look into any incentives that are available so that you can make the most of your purchase.
